Sylvia’s Wish

Sylvia is only 50 and she has terminal cancer….

She was admitted to hospital just under 3 weeks ago where long term partner Terry was told to sit and hold her hand as she probably wouldn’t make it through the night as she was so ill….she did make it and then she rallied round to slowly improve bit by bit under the care given to her by the nurses in the Palliative ward of Town & County Hospital in Wick.

Sylvia told her nurses that she would love to marry Terry before she dies and that sentence set an incredible set of wheels in motion to bring together a host of local businesses to help grant Sylvia’s dying wish.

Tuesday 9th of February saw everything come together and the transformation of a hospital day room into a beautiful wedding venue for Sylvia & Terry.

The Day Room was transformed not only by the nursing staff but also by Carol Smith of To Have & To Hold along with Fiona Miller Interior Textiles. Decorations were supplied by Gail’s Gift Box, Sam’s Furniture and Driftwood. Flowers were supplied by The Flower Patch, personalised champagne glasses were gifted by Willie Bain Engraving.

Next was the transformation of Sylvia. Helaina Rosie coloured and styled Sylvia’s hair both before and on the Wedding Day, using a Lark & Lily bridal headpiece in the back of Sylvia’s hair and the bracelet Sylvia wore was made by Craftastic. Vana Guy provided her excellent make up skills to give Sylvia her blushing bride look. Make up and perfumes were supplied by Reid’s Chemist and Superdrug. Of course every bride needs a stunning wedding dress and Beverley from Simply Bliss Bridal Boutique brought a selection to the hospital before the wedding for Sylvia to choose from. The dress was simply stunning and for the Groom, McAllan’s supplied Terry with kilt hire for the day, Jennifer Easton of JAED helped make perfect fits with her dress alteration skills. George Dunnett provided a limo and driver to allow Sylvia to have a wee tour around town before “arriving” for her wedding. She was piped into the ceremony by Michael Miller.

Sylvia was escorted down the aisle by her brother, Alan and the ceremony was conducted by The Reverend John Nugent of Wick St Fergus Church who read beautiful and poignant words. Not only was I there capturing the ceremony, but videoing it was STV News who had travelled up from Inverness to interview the couple after finding out about the community spirit in Wick. There was a buffet with food and drink fit to feed and water an army, all supplied by Tesco Wick Community , The Norseman Hotel and the Nursing Staff and their friends and family.

All in all Sylvia & Terry’s wedding day was a huge success, all organised within 2 weeks with the local community pulling together to help one of its own.

One of the nursing staff contacted me after the wedding and said that Sylvia said it was like a dream she couldn’t believe that people would do something like that for her. Well they did Sylvia and you’re now Mrs Vine….its time for you to concentrate on your future, no matter how long you may have, make the most of it and keep fighting lovely lady, you’ve come such a long way in 3 weeks. There was a lot of love for both you and Terry in the hospital today and I’m sure you will treasure the memories that you have.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your day and for sharing your wedding day story.
Love to both of you xx

And to the Nurses and Auxiliaries at the Town & County Hospital….you do a fantastic job day in day out and to go above and beyond your duties in this way shows how special and caring you are. You truly are angels. Thank you for what you do for all your patients
